tummytuck

Abdominoplasty, better known as a tummy tuck, is a surgery that removes excess fat and skin and restores weakened or separated muscles, resulting in a firmer and smoother abdomen. A tummy tuck can benefit women who have had multiple pregnancies, anyone who has undergone extreme weight loss, or simply has an area where the skin simply isn’t tight.

A person with normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is sagging and loose. Some common causes of this are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Large weight fluctuations
  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Prior surgery

Patients with excess fat but otherwise do not have loose, sagging skin are generally not candidates for tummy tuck surgery, but may benefit from liposuction or medical weight loss programs.

There are three types of tummy tucks:

  • A mini tummy tuck involves smoothing the part of the abdomen below the belly button.
  • A standard tummy tuck smoothes and flattens the stomach by tightening all of the abdominal wall skin.
  • An extended tummy tuck extends the standard tummy tuck to include the lower back and sides. This procedure is effective for extreme cases of excess skin and tissue.

During tummy tuck surgery, excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed; the muscles are tightened; and the remaining skin is repositioned to give the abdomen a flatter, more attractive appearance.

Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, large fluctuations in your weight can affect the results. This is why individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who are considering future pregnancies may be advised to postpone tummy tuck surgery.

Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for proper weight loss and exercise programs. Also, a tummy tuck will not fix stretch marks, although these can be somewhat improved if they are located in the areas of excess skin removed during the tummy tuck procedure.
